Mythologie Principle N0.1:
Design is multi-sensory. It involves what you see, what you feel, and what you smell.
While it's inevitable that different ideas will build off each other, too many concepts can become overwhelming causing a lack of clarity on exactly what it is you want to achieve. We recommend that you choose a theme. Perhaps it's a Rivendell-themed living room or a Viking-style bedroom. Be specific and make a decision.
The best way to compile these ideas and stay on theme is to create a Pinterest mood board. You'll get tons of ideas and the Pinterest algorithms will help keep you on track if you select the most relevant images. This will be your go-to source!
The very first thing to take note of after you have your mood board is the repeating colors and textures you see. For example, in a hobbit-inspired home décor theme, you'll see earthy and warm colors such as buttery yellow, light and dark brown, and then pops of color such as brick red and forest green. Textures would include aged wood, wrought iron, and small hints of luxury, such as a touch of velvet. Make a list in a note-taking app or keep a journal of the colors and textures which will create this mood.
Mythologie Principle N0.2:
Design is storytelling. Everything you choose is an external expression of who you are and the life you desire to lead.
The main pieces of furniture in a room speak to the style and atmosphere of the space. If you're going for a Rivendell vibe, but you have puffy black leather La-Z-Boy recliners in your living room, that is going to cancel out any elvish vibes. Again, you must go back to the color and texture palette. And I will add SHAPES to this now.
To select the right furniture, make sure the pieces have the right shape to match the theme of the atmosphere you're trying to create.
Rivendell has a lot of twisty curves, which are sometimes Celtic-looking, but a bit looser and less patterned than tight Celtic knotwork. Overall it's ornate, delicate, a bit more feminine, and even a bit Grecian with pillars, columns, curves and rich textures.
A Dwarven décor theme would incorporate more chunky and blocky furniture and would draw on Norse-inspired carvings and wood stains.
Once you have the right big pieces of furniture selected for your room, the next thing is to complete the look by choosing the right accents for your floor, surfaces, walls, and lighting.
The biggest impact will be the rug you select, any curtains or window treatments, pictures or artwork on the walls, and the main lighting for the room.
Go back to your mood board to make sure you stay on track with the atmosphere you're trying to create. The best place I've found for rugs and curtains is Wayfair. I recommend thrifting or attending auctions for big pieces of furniture such as tables and chairs, as well as great random décor pieces. Sometimes I have good luck with Facebook marketplace for certain items.
What you're looking for is definitely out there, it just takes a little searching and some determination!
Mythologie Principle N0.3:
Design is storytelling. Everything you choose is an external representation of who you are and the life you desire to lead.
Most people make the mistake of thinking a well-designed room consists only of furniture and wall hangings. They are forgetting one of the most important aspects of design, which is storytelling through our senses. Particularly through the sense of smell. There's a reason the most expensive hotels have designer scents carefully incorporated into their linens, and why Disneyland has a curated fragrance misted into the air as you experience your favorite rides. Studies show that smell watermarks memories, events, and emotions in your brain forever!
It's a huge mistake to not incorporate fragrance into your room design. Not only will the right fragrance help you set the mood and solidify the theme of your room, but it also will transform a "cold" space into a warm and inviting place where people always want to be. In other words, the right fragrance has power!
