What vessels are best for our Alchemy Candle Kits?
Alchemy Kits are the perfect way to repurpose your previously used Mythologie candle jars, but what if you have already recycled or repurposed your jars? Or perhaps you want to get creative and use a vessel that exhibits your personal style and aesthetic! What other vessels are the best (and more importantly, the safest!) to use with your Mythologie Alchemy Candle Kits?
Our wax kits contain 9oz of wax. This is actually a little more than our standard 8oz candles (because we know spills happen!), but size is an important thing to keep in mind when choosing your vessel. Premeasure your vessel's capacity and make sure it can actually hold the amount of wax you've prepared.
An ideal vessel should have a mouth of two to three inches. Wider vessels may not melt evenly with a single wick.
When considering vessels for candle pouring you need to look for containers that are:
Best Choice: Heat Resistant Glass:
The safest bet is always going to be heat-safe glass. Things such as mason jars and other food preparation containers designed for cooking should be more than fine for the temperatures produced in burning a candle. Things like teacups (though our 9 oz wax kits are so large, you'd need an EXTRA big teacup) and pots should also be safe.
Things to watch for:
Do NOT use glass that already has chips or cracks or that has been etched as etching can weaken the glass and cause it to crack.
Do NOT use drinking glasses or cocktail glasses. These are usually made out of thin glass which can easily shatter. Also, glasses like wine glasses and martini glasses can become top-heavy and spill easily.
What about other materials?
Metal
Metal can be safe for candles but as it does conduct heat, you will want to be sure the wick is not close to the metal itself as this can cause the metal to heat to a dangerous point.
Clay/Terracotta
If material is porous (like clay and terracotta) wax can seep into it which over time can become a fire hazard. If you wish to use a porous material, it's best to coat it in a flame-resistant glaze or sealant first.
We hope this will help you use our Alchemy Candle Kits! Remember, as always, never leave a candle burning unattended and follow good safety practices with any open flame!
