Jinja (神社) "Sunshower Shrine"
Mood: In a bamboo grove, surrounded by trees, stone steps lead to the sacred shrine.
Smells like: Raindrops drizzling down Japanese cypress trees onto fresh moss and growing bamboo.
Scent Strength: Medium
The traveler crosses the narrow bridge over the clear blue waters of the mountain river. Ahead the path disappears into the thick trees, evergreens and maples. The rush of water creates a constant ambience that spreads throughout the forest.
Steep stone steps ascend the slope beneath the trees. Here light filters through the trees onto the well-trodden path. Moss coats the stones, and spiderwebs glisten in the beams of sunshine.
Ahead stands stone lanterns and a great gate guarded by lion dogs covered by moss. They have sat through the ages, keeping watch.
Another set of stone stairs lead up to a secluded structure, open to nature, quiet as if itself is a part of the woods around it. Here, peace awaits those who seek it.
