A warm summer breeze ripples across the growing fields. The grains have ripened, and the first harvest is here.

The people gather to praise the sun and pray for a successful harvest. Dolls are fashioned out of husks as the story is told of the sun god's battle against the blight.

Hills will be climbed and bonfires lit. The celebration will last long into the night while the villagers dance beneath the harvest moon.

Throughout 2024 we'll be introducing new candles to celebrate the seasonal feasts of Gaelic Tradition. The third of these candles, Golden Bounty, is for the early spring feast of Lughnasadh.

WHAT IS LUGHNASADH?

Lughnasadh is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of the harvest season, halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox.

The pagan festival is named after Lugh, the Celtic god of the sun and light. Lugh was an all powerful god, fierce warrior, master craftsman and the rightful king of the Tuatha de Danann. Lugh was also the father of the mythical hero Cú Chulainn.

The Celts believed that Lugh fought two deities each year to guarantee a successful harvest for his people. One god, Crom Dubh, guarded the grain which Lugh tried to seize. Sometimes the grain itself was personified by a woman called Eithne or Ethniu (which literally means grain in English) who was Lugh’s birth mother.

Lugh also battled a figure representing blight, who is sometimes depicted as Balor of the evil eye. Balor was Eithnu’s father who locked his daughter away in an isolated castle after hearing a prophecy that his grandson would kill him.The story mirrors the Greek story of Hades and Persephone.

Lughnasadh was a time of unpredictable weather in Ireland so this festival could have been a way for people to hope for good weather which would have improved the yield of a harvest.

Wax: Each candle is made from a premium coconut-blend wax, which is a sustainable & renewable source!

Wicks: We use cotton wicks that are always lead-free in our regular candles and sample packs, and our Signature Deluxe candles feature crackling wood wicks for the ultimte multi-sensory experience!

Fragrances: Unique custom-developed fragrances, not found elsewhere, and always phthalate-free. Made with premium blended non-toxic fragrance oils & essential oils.

Vessels: Our Signature Deluxe amber glass vessels feature straight, smooth sides and laser-etched custom wooden lids; our regular vessels feature a screw-on black metal lid. Both are designed to be repurposed after our 50+ hours burn-time has been fully enjoyed! Our sample tins are also lidded to make them perfect for travel!

1) For the first burn, let the candle burn for up to 3-4 hours - or until the melted "pool" reaches the edge. (Typically 1-2 hours for a 2oz sample size.) This prevents tunneling! Candles have memory!

2) Always trim your wooden wick to 1/8 inch.If your wick is too long, the flame will be too big and can become a fire hazard and also give off wisps of smoke that shouldn't be there. (Nail clippers work great for wooden wicks!)

3) Clear any debris from your candlebefore burning, including any soot build-up on the wick. This will help your candle to last longer and burn cleaner! Never burn near anything flammable.

4) Always place your candle on a non-flammable surface! All candle vessels will get hot - be sure to place your candle on a proper candle holder or heat-safe surface that will not burn or ignite.

5) Never leave a candle unattended!In addition, be sure there is nothing nearby your candle that can ignite (hairspray, a wall, paper, a lamp, a pillow, etc.)
